External Counterpulsation Therapy

In recent years, basic scientific research has demonstrated that arteries, rather than just being liquid-carrying pipes, are very dynamic living tissues. They release from the cells that make up their lining, many chemicals that control the contraction and dilatation of the vessels but also control many other physiologic processes in the body. It is now becoming clear that changes in pressure relationships within arteries is a potent stimulus for the release of many of the chemical just mentioned.

The immediate effect EECP has on the body is to improve blood flow to just about anywhere in the body. The longer term effect appears to be continued improvement of blood flow to areas where it has been compromised, particularly by arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

It has now been shown EECP can improve blood flow to brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, skin, genitals, legs and arms and bowel. Reports of improvement in such diverse diseases as traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, macular degeneration, erectile dysfunction, arteriosclerosis of leg arteries, skin diseases and reduced kidney function are to be found.

The usual course of treatment is 35 one hour sessions in which the patient lies on the bed as the tourniquets inflate-deflate 60-80 times per minute. This very low risk noninvasive therapy and the most common side effect is minor chafing of the skin.
