The need for oxygen in humans is universal. Without it survival is only a matter of a few minutes. Since the air we breathe is about 20% oxygen, this need is usually met without problem. In certain circumstances, however, additional oxygen can make a big difference in how oxygen sensitive processes in the body may proceed. This is where hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be especially valuable. Additional oxygen is delivered by two mechanisms using the hyperbaric oxygen chamber or a combination of both;
• Dissolves into the liquid portion of the blood by
the increased atmospheric pressure within the chamber
• Supplied by increasing the oxygen in the air that is breathed
This process is a delicate balance as too much pressure or too much oxygen can be damaging rather than helpful and requires the proper medical knowledge and equipment for effective, safe therapy.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is widely used around the world to successfully treat a myriad of medical conditions and is starting to find increased use in this country. At Integrated Medicine Group we employ a single place, full service hyperbaric chamber. It is used here to treat an ever increasing number of clinical problems shown to be responsive to the delicate balance of oxygen in the blood.
Examples of clinical conditions that have been shown to benefit from this therapy include: stroke, non-healing or slowly healing injuries including surgical and traumatic wounds, smoking inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, peripheral neuropathies including diabetic neuropathy, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, osteomyelitis and other specific infections, radiation damage and crush injuries. There is now developing evidence that it can help in speeding recovery from cosmetic surgery as well as many other surgical and traumatic wounds, macular degeneration, dementia including Alzheimer's disease, treating migraine headaches and other pain syndromes, Lyme disease and autism.
